The ocean is one of the planet's most important economic and ecological systems, yet much of its value remains invisible in traditional decision-making. Ocean Central was created to change that.
Developed by Wave, the platform brings together scientific data, interactive visualizations, and storytelling to make complex ocean information accessible to policymakers, investors, researchers, and the public.
Blue Green Future supported the development of Ocean Central by helping translate ocean science into actionable insights.
Ocean Central helps make the value of living ocean systems visible to the people making decisions about their future.
A central challenge in ocean conservation is that many of the benefits provided by healthy marine ecosystems are not reflected in economic systems.
Blue Green Future contributed to the development and validation of carbon valuation methodologies for mangroves, seagrasses, and saltmarshes, providing a foundation for Ocean Central's ecosystem valuation tools. This work was led by our co-founder and CEO Ralph Chami, who serves as Wave's Chief Economist.
These methodologies help quantify the climate benefits of coastal ecosystems while demonstrating their potential role in nature-positive economic development.
While carbon storage is an important component of ecosystem value, it represents only part of the picture.
Blue Green Future helped develop content and analysis highlighting the broader benefits generated by living ocean systems, including biodiversity support, fisheries productivity, coastal protection, nutrient cycling, and contributions to local livelihoods.
Data alone does not drive action. Blue Green Future contributed narrative content throughout the platform to help contextualize scientific information and communicate why ocean health matters to economies, communities, and future generations.
The result is a platform that not only tracks the condition of ocean ecosystems, but also helps users start to understand the embedded financial value within them.
Ocean Central provides a new way to explore and understand ocean health. By combining rigorous science with accessible storytelling and ecosystem valuation, the platform helps make the benefits of living marine systems visible to decision-makers.
As efforts to protect and regenerate the ocean continue to grow, tools like Ocean Central can help bridge the gap between ecological knowledge and economic decision-making, supporting a future where healthy oceans are recognized as critical natural infrastructure and productive assets.
