Climate mitigation & social resilience in a small island state

Bahamas is home to one of the largest seagrass meadows globally – 93,000km2 with the potential to expand back to 130,000km2. Bahamas has committed to protect and restore this seabed, delivering climate mitigation, supporting SDGs, producing verified tradable carbon credits.

BGF is working with partners to map, restore, and protect this seagrass system using science and community engagement. Using the baseline measures and state-of-the-art scientific methodology, BGF provides the projections of carbon sequestration yields and produces the “forwards” to bring investors in. The project:

  • Supports climate mitigation via carbon sequestration
  • Protects marine biodiversity and fisheries
  • Shields coastlines from rising seas and storm surges
  • Funds sustainable development
  • Delivers jobs to local communities

De-risked investment: Offtake purchases of Bahamas seagrass carbon credits are insured by Lloyds up to $200 million with PwC as Lead Financial Advisor.
