SUMMARY:Health Sciences Talk Series - The Value of A Living Nature
DESCRIPTION:The American University of Beirut presents the Health Sciences Talk Series \nHumanity is facing the twin risks of climate change and the loss of nature and its biodiversity. These risks are linked due to human activity. The current economic model has operated under the assumption that the economy sits outside of nature. This has allowed for an over-focus on economic growth at the expense of a living and thriving nature\, with the result that we are now facing existential risk to humanity. \n\nThis Health Sciences Talk Series will highlight how we arrived at this current situation\, and present a nature-based solution to the twin risks. He will showcase a new economic framework that ensures sustainable and shared prosperity that is nature and people positive. \nRalph Chami will be presenting The Value of a Living Nature to Our Health and Economic Well Being \n  \n

SUMMARY:Meeting of the Seas
DESCRIPTION:Meeting of the Seas \nJuly 16 - 19\, 2023 \nTenerife\, Spain \n  \nCONSERVATION\nIn mid-July Tenerife will become a world benchmark for territories making a stand for the future of seas and their ecosystems. This time around\, the congress will conduct an analysis of the challenges involved in conservation of the oceans in the wake of the UN's historical 'High Seas Treaty' in March for ocean protection. \nThe congress slogan will be 'Conservation'\, in the dual sense of conservation of marine ecosystems and conservation of foodstuffs from the sea. \nThe congress combining science\, gastronomy and fishing.\n\nThe only congress in the world combining gastronomy with science and the fishing industry\, to debate and home in on defence of maritime culture\, and call for urgent sustainable measures for the best possible recovery of the health of our oceans. This time around we will address conservation as a tool to preserve marine biodiversity in international waters. \nMarine biologists\, oceanographers\, leading personalities in the fishing industry and master chefs from all over the world will produce an updated overview of the marine world and its conservationist challenges.

SUMMARY:Hinemoana Halo Ocean Summit
DESCRIPTION:HINEMOANA HALO: A BLUE CARBON ECONOMY FOR THE PACIFIC\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nConservation International Aotearoa has partnered with the Indigenous people of Aotearoa and the Pacific\, along with scientists\, economists\, and investors to create the Hinemoana Halo Ocean Initiative. The initiative will support groups to utilize traditional ocean customs and practices to protect Aotearoa’s coastal waters and high seas (including the EEZ). \n\n\n\n\n\nConservation International Aotearoa has partnered with the Indigenous people of Aotearoa and the Pacific\, along with scientists\, economists\, and investors to create the Hinemoana Halo Ocean Initiative. The initiative will support groups to utilize traditional ocean customs and practices to protect Aotearoa’s coastal waters and high seas (including the EEZ). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHinemoana Halo will provide ocean climate leadership in coordination with Māori and Pacific leaders region wide. The initative will represent Aotearoa’s first indigenous-led voluntary blue carbon regime in partnership with Indigenous tribes and the New Zealand Government. \nOur shared goal is to advance a region-wide movement to reconnect with our common ocean heritage and legacy as kaitiaki (guardians) of the moana. This partnership will establish a marine recovery plan that will accelerate the recovery of populations of taonga (scared) species\, from whales to sea lions\, dolphins\, and manta rays\, in Aotearoa’s coastal waters. \nHinemoana Halo will promote self-determination and help Iwi/Māori to protect\, care\, manage and monitor Aotearoa’s coastal waters and high seas in partnership with local communities\, using both traditional approaches and current science. \nHinemoana Halo will involve a sustainable financing mechanism that delivers marine protection and provides direct benefits to Indigenous Māori Tribes\, from jobs to infrastructure and opportunities. This initiative will promote inter-indigenous economic relations and trade across Aotearoa and the Pacific.

SUMMARY:European Central Bank -- Green Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Toward a Nature-Based Economy: \nInvesting in Blue and Green Natural Capital for a Regenerative Future\n  \nPresented at the European Central Bank\nFrankfurt\, Germany\nMay 23\, 2023\n  \nSeminar by:\nRalph Chami1 and Carlos M. Duarte2\n  \n\n\nBlue Green Future\, Rebalance Earth\, and Williams College \n\n\nKing Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST)\, Red Sea Research Center (RSRC) and Computational Bioscience Research Center (CBRC)\, Thuwal\, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.\n\n\n  \nAbstract\n  \nHumanity is facing the twin risks of climate change and the loss of nature and its biodiversity. Both risks\, to a large extent\, are due to human behavior. Nature\, according to science\, also holds the key to mitigating climate change. Changing our mindset towards nature\, from viewing it as an externality\, to one that places nature at the center of economic activity is key to saving nature\, reducing climate risk\, and saving humanity. \n  \nIn this seminar\, we will provide a road map as to how to build an equitable and inclusive economy with nature and people at its core. We will highlight the challenges\, opportunities\, and the promise of building such a nature-based economic by providing examples from the blue carbon market. \n  \nPolicy plays a pivotal role in the development and governance of nature markets. This includes prudential\, regulatory\, coordinating\, and incentivizing roles that Central Banks\, in particular\, and macroeconomic policy\, in general\, need to shoulder. \n  \nThe term “Blue Carbon” was coined by Prof. Duarte and co-authors\, which refers to the potential to mitigate and adapt to climate change through the conservation and restoration of coastal habitats\, including seagrass meadows\, mangroves and salt-marshes\, which represent the most intense carbon sinks in the biosphere. Since the strategy was proposed in 2009\, Blue Carbon has grown to become a mainstream nature-based solution to climate change with important co-benefits. \n  \nBy mobilizing billions of euros in carbon and biodiversity credits while helping provide jobs and sustainable livelihoods for communities implementing the projects\, blue carbon converges with the efforts to rebuild blue natural capital\, the ecosystem components that support human wellbeing. Indeed\, blue natural capital is the new “blue real estate”\, breaking through the 2\,000 years of considering the ocean “terra nullis” (No one’s land)\, where living marine organisms had no intrinsic value and only gained value when dead (and sold). \n  \nFinally\, we will provide examples of how a new economy of nature could be designed such that it realizes the economic value of the benefits flowing from Blue natural capital\, thereby ensuring sustainable and shared prosperity for all.
